This fresh take on Sweet’s legendary hit was sparked by drummer/songwriter Derek Ferguson’s love for vintage synth sounds and the song’s undeniably catchy hook. While Sweet’s original version featured an ARP Odyssey, Refestramus’ cover began with a GarageBand synth on an iPad, embracing a DIY ethos that defines the band’s creative approach.

A Unique Recording Approach

Aside from live drums and vocals, the entire track was recorded on an iPad before being expertly mixed and mastered by Ian Beabout at his studio. The lineup for this recording includes:

Derek Pavlic – Keyboards, Guitars, Bass
Craig Cairns – Vocals
Ian Beabout – Producer & Engineer (also known for his work with Colouratura)

A.I. Meets Rock ‘n’ Roll

Unlike traditional releases, Refestramus’ “Fox on the Run” won’t be available on streaming platforms like iTunes or Spotify—it’s a YouTube-exclusive experience. The music video is largely an A.I.-driven visual journey, except for the lively presence of Agent M, who dances, runs, and radiates joy to the track. Ferguson, a fan of experimenting with A.I. visuals, even transformed his bandmates into glam-rock icons—culminating in a memorable shot where Craig Cairns appears as a fox. Plus, an A.I.-generated fox even makes a cameo alongside Derek Pavlic and Ferguson in the studio.

What’s Next for Refestramus?

The band is currently hard at work on their third studio album, collaborating with Rick Witkowski of Crack the Sky at Studio L in Weirton, West Virginia. With Ian Beabout producing once again, the album is slated for release just before Refestramus takes the stage at HRH Prog Fest in Yarmouth, UK, this fall. Fans can also catch them at the International Pop Overthrow Fest in Chicago this spring.

Formed in May 2020 as a home studio project during the COVID-19 pandemic, Refestramus has since released two albums: “Decoupage” (2021) and “Intourist” (2024)—and their momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
