On September 30th, 2024, Captain of the Lost Waves unveiled his fifth studio album, Beautiful Ugly, featuring nine original compositions.
Now, the album returns in a new form — reimagined as a pure instrumental journey. Stripped of vocals, this sonic experience showcases the music in its raw, unspoken essence. The instrumental edition is available exclusively on YouTube, with releases on all major streaming platforms and a full digital rollout coming in the weeks ahead.
Beautiful Ugly Instrumentals “Trance Portals”
“When ‘Beautiful Ugly’ was made, in the wake of a life-changing car accident, starting the writing process around August 2022, I quickly concluded that these were sacred, reflective healing songs. When I heard the sonic landscapes that Damian Clark was producing in response to my initial sketches, it seemed to emanate between Vangelis and Ryuichi Sakamoto, eventually realizing it sounded like a Studio Ghibli soundtrack. These gentle, evocative, and powerfully meditative pieces became my life raft in my rehabilitation.
The violin work of Wendy Ross was exquisitely executed, often being less notes rather than more. I would often listen to these pieces without the vocals, feeling entirely hypnotized, mesmerized and transported to another world. I still cannot quantify that world, and as to what this album means to me. Mark Tucker’s amazing love for the record is reflected in the outstanding engineering and co-production, the only one so well-versed in his skill set could realize.
All of this was then dreamed up to exist in an ethereal tunnel, such as the strong image that Jan Gove – Escapadeum (www.escapadeum.co.uk) and I were mirroring to each other as if the visuals should serve within this womb-like setting of birth and creation. Add to this the postscripts written by Jamie Burns, the idea of listening to these tracks and watching the visuals is not to placate the restless mind but to be at one with the simple task of breathing in and out and being here needing no other distraction or temptation to go anywhere else.”
