Edison Suit

Edison Suit is the creative vision of Mark Smith and Barry Wood

Short Bio

Mark Smith

Aside from gigging more than ought to be humanly possible, Mark also composes music for TV and teaches guitar to multiple students. His first love is guitar but he’s also an accomplished played of mandolin, bass, dobro, and banjo. Just out of high school Mark attended UCLA for a semester before dropping out to go on the road. That tour lasted a month before it self destructed sending Mark back to LA to work as a pit musician. He’s played many places around the world including Seoul, Tokyo, Hawaii, Bosnia and the Johnston Islands. The self proclaimed “sideman of sidemen,” Mark has played with people who have played with: Peter Gabriel, Thomas Dolby, Tracy Chapman, Keith Richards, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Jewel, Jean Luc Ponty, Jon Butcher, Don Henley, Andy Summers and the Violent Femmes.

Barry Wood

Musically Barry has done a little bit of everything: live performance, songwriting, composing music for commercials, film, and TV, writing string arrangements, doing audio post, owning a commercial recording studio, producing albums, and mastering albums for hundreds of other artists. In 2010 he was commissioned to compose a microtonal piece for new violin family string octet The Hutchins Consort as part of a program funded by a grant from the National Endowment For The Arts. His recording experience started with a Casiotone keyboard, a Mattel Synsonics drum machine, two cassette decks and some Y-cables. He soon moved on to a Micro Moog and a Juno 60, progressed to stacks of keyboards, then to racks of modules, and eventually to virtual instruments. These days his studio The Other Room is completely mobile and he’s done recording sessions all over the country. Primarily a keyboard player, he also plays Chapman Stick, bass, percussion, and lap steel guitar.

Paul McIntire

Paul is an accomplished Electric Violinist who normally focuses his energies studying and performing jazz. He’s now living in Asheville, NC where he’s often found performing with other local musicians or doing solo violin gigs. His electric violin work merges into the electro/ acoustic mélange of Edison Suit with ease. On all three Edison Suit releases his playing has added an unusual texture to an already diverse pallet of colors.

Bret Wadams

Bret and Barry were in a rock bands together back in the late 80s doing original showcase gigs around the LA scene. Over the years Bret has played with Commander Cody and members Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pure Prairie League, Marshal Tucker Band, Outlaws, Little Feat, Orleans, Firefall, and others. Barry tracked Bret’s drums for the latest Edison Suit album while visiting him in upstate New York. Even though he’s mainly a rock and blues drummer, Bret had little trouble locking into the unique song forms and unusual time signatures on the album, coming up with drum tracks that are both powerful and nuanced.
